Exhibit: English Paper
Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication
Skills: TC106: Give and accept feedback in a positive way
TC109: Make and/or follow a set of rules and procedures
Writing a paper can be a challenging process, but when you are able to get advice about it then the paper will turn out much better and you will be happy about it. High school papers usually don’t start off as final copies; teachers make a point to have a student turn in a rough draft so they can make necessary adjustments. These rough drafts are usually looked at by other students so I would have to help others with their papers and others would help me with mine. Teachers also usually give a set of rules for each paper a student has to write. For many of my English papers the set of rules was the same and I just had to follow them in order to do well on the paper.
I have had to write many papers before and most of them had to have a rough draft. However, this paper was different, instead of turning in a full rough draft we turned in each paragraph a day at a time and had it reviewed by two people along with the teacher’s review. This gave me a lot of feedback on my paper. I also had to give other people advice on their papers in a positive way as to help them with their overall paper. The feedback I received I definitely took into consideration and this made it so my overall paper was much better than it would have been. Since I was able to listen to the advice from other people I was able to better myself and my paper.
These types of papers must have exact parts. Research papers usually have a specific set of rules that must be followed in order to have a good paper. Since I followed these rules it was simple for me to do well. The rubric established by my teacher was a way to perfection on the paper; I just had to follow what he wanted me to do. For all papers there are rules that people must follow, these could include structure, grammar and overall style. This type of paper was more of a formal research paper so it couldn’t be printed with colored ink and looking all special; it had to be simple and concise. With a research paper you also have to include a list of sources at the end to give your paper credit, this rule is special to research papers. Having included all the necessities and following what I needed to I was successful.
Following the rules and being able to accept/give feedback are two skills that everyone needs in order to be successful. A chiropractor, my career choice, needs these skills because they need to be able to follow the rules or they could adjust someone the wrong way and have them end up in pain. They also need to be able to give and accept feedback because this is how they become a better chiropractor and help others become better. These skills apply because for college. I have to follow the rules and when my teachers try to help me I have to accept that help. This especially comes in handy when working on a paper and I can get feedback on what I need to fix.

Exhibit: Football Team
Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication
Skills: TC107: Understand and contribute to the goals of a team
TC108: Show commitment to a team
As a student participating in the varsity football team, I have shown commitment and contribution to goals. The varsity football team is something special and has had a very positive effect on my life by showing me good morals. As a part of the team not only did I have to commit for myself I had to commit for those around me. However, commitment is just one aspect a player must contain; contribution to the overall goals of the team is another very important aspect. These two things are emphasized in this sport and on a team like this.
I have been a part of the varsity squad for three years now. This alone shows that I am loyal to the team and all those who are on it. Our school is one that is relatively small, one where everyone knows everyone. This means that when one person is a part of the football team the whole town knows. This puts a lot of pressure on the individuals of the team because if you mess up, get in trouble, everyone is going to know about it and your team may suffer due to this. I can proudly say that through my three years of varsity and even my one year of junior varsity football I have shown a lot of dedication because I have not let my team down and have stayed out of trouble. Another way I have shown loyalty to my team is by putting in the time in the off season. For football we have plenty of lifts and cardio days over the summer that we don’t necessarily have to attend but should. To my recollection I have not missed a single one of these dates, unless prior arrangements forced me to do so.
While being a part of this team I have shown many skills. This team has had many goals and I have applied myself the best I can to have a position in them. Every year we have had new ambitions and each year I have done what I could to help my team achieve them. Some of these are long term, like our overall record. However, some are short term and must be handled day by day. When things get tough it is very hard to want to reach a target. However, I understand that I must fight and try my hardest to help my teammates and myself reach the goals we have set. It may be very difficult for others to go to practice every day, but for me it is necessary because this is the only way we as a team can get better and maintain our objective. The work put in during the off season is really the best example of how my team and I have worked toward our ambitions. Most young men and women would rather be doing something else when not in season, but for me it is just a chance to reach my goals and help better the team.
When working with others for schooling and eventually in a chiropractic office, everyone must work as a team and help each other in order to get everything done. After a while, I hope to become the owner of my own practice and when this occurs I would have to achieve my own goals along with the goals of those who work with me. Right now I need to have many skills and commitment and goal contribution are two major ones. I must be able to commit myself to everything I do and try to achieve the goals I set to become what I want to. These skills do not simply just go away, and since I contain them now I don’t intend for them to ever go away.

TC103: Anticipate the impact of actions or words on others
I have been a football player my whole life. These past three years I have been a part of the varsity team and I have learned all the traits that come with this. As a player it has come to my attention that there are specific things that the team does every year. Some of them have led me to integrate certain skills and understand more about myself. While doing these important things I have obtained skills in areas like role modeling and awareness of others. One of the key things we did was help the elementary kids by reading with them and overall showing them just what it’s like to be more grown. As I captain of my team I had to show not only the little kids how to act but also make sure my teammates were being positive as well.
I come from a large family of which I am the youngest sibling. This means I have had a lot of role models. I know just how important they were to me and how I listened and followed everything they said when I was younger. Now I am the role model and I have to show younger children the correct way to act and behave. Going to see those elementary kids every Friday and watching their eyes light up at the sight of us reminds me how important we are to them. Since we mean so much to these young boys and girls, I have to be on my top behavior and make sure I show the correct way to act and speak. This means using appropriate and well thought out language to make sure they understand what is right and wrong. I understand that as soon as I walk into the building I am being watched by so many little eyes and I must be exceptionally respectable.
When visiting the youth in the elementary I also understand I must see things there way. I can’t expect so much of them and must be patient. We are there for them, they are the future and we must give them a chance to grow. While there we listen and help them read, which can be very difficult at times due to their lack of experience in this area. I recognize that I am there to help them with their reading and overall lifestyle. I also realize that they are not as advanced as I am in the education aspect, so I have to listen and accept them for what they are. They are still learning to do the things I take for granted now; things like reading and comprehension when talking about what was just read. For them it is a lot different and they don’t have an advanced point of view that comes with experience and time. Since I am there and trying I am gaining new skills and seeking to understand them.
These skills that I have apprehended will help me throughout life in everything I do. My goals are to become a chiropractor and these will come in handy with this because in this career one must be able to understand and comprehend all sorts of people. Chiropractors see all different kinds of patients in a particular day some may be more educated while others have little knowledge of what is occurring. When speaking and working on all these different people I will have to understand what I say will be listened to. Even the smartest of people that walk into my office will listen to what I have to tell them because I am the expert. These skills will not only apply to my future they are affecting me currently; as a young adult and an upperclassman, I have many younger individuals looking up to me and seeking advice from me. These skills will help me show them the correct way to act and will also help me better myself by being able to convey the right message to them.

Exhibit: Football Captain
Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication
Skills: TC110: Help other team members accomplish their tasks
TC111: Serve as a leader in your own area of expertise
I am three time starting varsity football player. The last two of the three years I have been captain for my team. This means that all of the players that have been on my team these past two years have looked to me for help and instruction. With this role comes a lot of responsibility because I have to understand everything that is going on just in case a teammate needs my assistance with something. Since I am a three year starter it is easy for me because I have basically mastered all the positions and can help lead my team in the correct way of doing all things.
When striving for greatness it is always good to look for help. This is something I provide for my teammates by helping them push forward and keep working. My main priority on this team is not to think only about myself it is to try and push others on my team to get better; if I accomplish this then I will be the cause of their success and will be the one who helped them reach whatever goals they had set for themselves. My team’s success is a lot more important to me then my own success, so I help others way before I better myself. If someone comes to me who needs help achieving something I will drop everything just to better them because I understand that their success is helping me succeed along with my team.
Being the three year starter I am helps me by easily being able to help those around me learn the right way. I have played the same position all of these years along with other ones and I understand them all quite well. This success and accomplishment at each position makes me a proficient leader and I can show others how to do these things. I was also picked as captain of my team for a reason, I look to help others and I’m a positive role model. I show my teammates with my actions and my words how to do all things correctly. I also take the time to allow others rep’s at my position to make sure they learn and know it as good as I do. When I’m not taking rep’s myself, I am watching and helping coach those who are there because of my knowledge in this area.
The skills present will definitely help me in the future with the career I have chosen. These skills show that I am a leader and I do my best to help others. They also show that I am one that leads those in the area I am best at. So, when I become a chiropractor I will be a specialist in this area and when others need help within this are I will be able to help them. Having skills like these help me now just as well as they will in the future. Being a leader and helping others with things that I am good at is an important part of my life and since these are the two skills, I will be able to do so.

Exhibit: Simile English 10 Assignment
Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication
Skills: TC104: Listen to different group members and ask relevant questions
TC105: Express one’s point of view in a teamwork setting
When I was a freshman I had so many questions. High school was a brand new experience that posed a lot of questions. Most of these questions were brought up by the homework the teachers would assign me. The work was a lot harder than it used to be and by myself it was tough to do assignments as well as the teachers expected. The best thing that happened when assigned work as a freshman was to be assigned a group to do it with, or even just another partner. Being able to converse with another person made it much easier to finish the work and do it well. This assignment is one that I had the chance to work with someone else. We worked together and were able to give each other ideas so we had the best answer we possibly could. It was an assignment in which we had to answer several questions and when we put our thoughts together we came up with great answers.
The only problem with working in a group is effective communication. In order to be successful in a group project or partnership you have to be able to communicate with the other people. This is why I liked these types of work, because I found it very easy to ask questions and be able to understand others responses. In the assignment my partner and I had to discuss the questions being asked and if we didn’t have a complete answer by ourselves we had to ask each other to dig deeper and find more out. I find that sometimes when I’m working in a group I may have a good answer but someone else may have a better answer so I have to be able to listen to their answer and understand that it was better. There are even times when two of our ideas can be combined and then we would have to ask how we could chain these two answers into one. This only occurred when good questions were asked and answers were listened to.
Working in a group can be very simple if everyone contributes to the overall goal. When working in together with my partner I would have to make sure and give him my opinion so he was not the only one doing work. This also helps because some of the time my ideas were either better or they added on to the ideas already present and made our answer much better. I found that when I worked together with a partner and shared with them how I thought about an answer that the way we finally answered that problem was much better than it would have been if only one of us was contributing. As long as I tried to give my opinion and so did my partner we could answer the question asked thoroughly and easily.
Expressing myself is something I find very easy; I also find it very easy to listen to others and making sure the best option occurs. When I become a chiropractor I am definitely going to need to be able to express my point of view. I will need to tell the patients just what I think they need to do and how they should do it. I will also need to be able to listen to others and be able to understand them enough to ask questions about it. When a tricky patient comes in I need to be able to ask other more experienced chiropractors for help and listen for the best response. These two skills also affect me now because I have to be able to work like this in school. In the future I will have to work in many groups and these two skills will make it an easy and enjoyable experience.

Exhibit: Cinco de Mayo Paper
Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication
Skills: TC101: Understand the cultural traditions of others
TC112: Request support or help from others when needed
By the time someone is a senior in High school they most likely have taken a foreign language class; whether it was before they even entered high school or if it was prior to senior year. When I was a Freshman I took my first foreign language class, Spanish 1. The class taught me all about the Mexican people and all of those that spoke languages similar to Spanish. This was not only a class it was an experience. I now have an understanding of the people along with the language. This paper was one that I used to take notes. It gave me all types of information pertaining to Cinco de Mayo, which helped me learn the culture and understand all about the people and what they believed in.
When taking a class that isn’t in your native language it can be challenging. However, this process just makes it easier for people to understand different types of people and how those people live. Spanish 1 wasn’t all about learning the language, some of the time we would focus on the special things the Mexican people did. Some of these special things included holidays they celebrated, different types of special birthdays, and even days like we have with special twists. This helped me understand how different cultures do different things. It also helped show me the similarities between Americans and others. In class we would watch videos of students that lived in Mexico just to understand them better. These videos would show me the average day of a student there and I could compare it to an average day here.
There were times while in class that I had no clue what was going on due to the difference in language. When this occurred I would either have to help myself by trying to look up some of the conversations and understanding that way or I would need assistance and I would have to ask for help. In these times of need I would either have to turn to people around me, that also didn’t understand, or to the teacher. Sometimes those who were learning with me understood better than I did so they could help me but most of the time I would have to get succor from my teacher. In rare cases I would have questions and the teacher would not be around, in these times I turned to the foreign exchange students who I was close with to get help from them. This was typically the best advice because they understood fully and were able to give me perfect answers.
These two skills will help me throughout my life because I now know that I can understand those who at first I don’t understand by simply taking the time to learn. These skills will help me in becoming a chiropractor because some days I may have people that don’t speak perfect English so I will be able to understand them the best I can. Sometimes people will come into my office and have issues talking so in this case I will be able to understand them by listening better and asking questions to see if I understood. These skills will relate to me as a future young adult because when I am confronted by those who are not speaking English I will be able to understand some of what they are saying, and if I can’t I will be able to ask questions about what they are saying. Overall, these two skills will play a very important part in my life, present and future.
